Express Entry 2025: What’s New and Who’s Getting Invited
(3-4 min estimated read time)

In February 2025, IRCC announced a new direction for Express Entry draws, and if you’re a candidate already living in Canada, this could be a good opportunity for you to be selected.
Canada’s labour shortages continue to shape immigration priorities, and this year’s category-based draws are focusing even more on in-demand job sectors and francophone candidates.
If you’re planning to apply through Express Entry or wondering if you qualify, here’s what you need to know.
What Changed in 2025?
On February 27, IRCC confirmed it will continue category-based draws under Express Entry and increase the number of invitations for:
- Candidates already living in Canada
- Workers in high-demand job sectors such as education, healthcare and skilled-trade positions
- French speakers, even if you’re living outside of Quebec
Targeted Job Categories in 2025
Here are the six priority categories IRCC is focusing on, with examples of eligible job titles and NOC codes:
- Healthcare
- Registered Nurse (NOC 31301)
- Licensed Practical Nurse (NOC 32101)
- Physiotherapist (NOC 31202)
- Education
- Elementary School Teacher (NOC 41221)
- Early Childhood Educator (NOC 42202)
- Trades
- Electrician (NOC 72200)
- Plumber (NOC 72300)
- Carpenter (NOC 72310)
What Should You Do?
If you think you might qualify for a category-based draw:
- Check your NOC code: make sure your job duties match the in-demand occupation listed for a category-based draw.
- Complete your language test: especially your TEF Canada, if you speak French.
- Create or update your Express Entry profile, ensure that you meet the latest requirements including the minimum proof of funds you need to show
- If you’re already living in Canada (under a study or work permit), this could be your moment
PROOF OF FUNDS REQUIREMENT 2025
On July 7, 2025, IRCC updated the amount of funds you need to show at the time you apply for permanent residence through an Express Entry or PNP program after receiving your ITA. These updates are based on 50% of Canada’s low-income cut-off totals to make sure newcomers can afford to live here.
If you’re already in the Express Entry pool, you must update your profile to make sure you’ve indicated an amount which meets the new minimum requirement. If not, your profile could become ineligible for programs such as the Federal Skilled Worker, even if you were eligible before the funds update.
Don’t panic: you don’t need to upload your proof of funds documents now, just indicate the correct amount. Your proof of funds documents will be requested after you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and begin your permanent residence application.
