5 common mistakes in Canadian Spousal or Common-law Sponsorship Applications

5 common mistakes in Canadian Spousal or Common-law Sponsorship Applications

Northia Immigration | 5 common mistakes in Canadian Spousal or Common-law Sponsorship Applications

Have you ever asked yourself what are the 5 common mistakes in Canadian Spousal or Common-law Sponsorship Applications?

Sponsoring a family member to Canada is a step full of hope, but also full of little details that can trip you up. The process may seem straightforward at first, but immigration rules, document requirements, and timelines can quickly become overwhelming. At Northia, we’ve worked with many sponsors who thought they had everything right, only to find their applications delayed or rejected due to a small oversight. Here are five mistakes you’ll want to avoid.

Even small errors can lead to returned applications, lost fees, and long delays that separate families longer than expected. Knowing what to avoid from the start can save time, money, and stress.

Mistake 1: Using Outdated or Incorrect Application Forms

One of the easiest errors to make is using the wrong version of the form. Even a single outdated form can cause the entire application to be returned.

Additionally, when completing forms, avoid leaving blank spaces. Use ‘not applicable’ or ‘none’ so that it indicates to the officer that you haven’t skipped the question.

OUR TIP: Always download your forms fresh from IRCC’s website right before you complete your package.

Mistake 2: Missing Signatures

Missing just one required document or forgetting to sign a form are common reasons applications are returned.

While some forms can be signed electronically by typing your name, other forms require a wet signature. Ensure you have read the requirements carefully. For example, if applying for the spousal open work permit, IMM5707 Family Information Form requires a wet signature.

Mistake 3: Misunderstanding Eligibility or Sponsor Requirements

Some sponsors overlook key requirements, like who counts in your family size, past sponsorship bars, or not meeting the income requirement. Even changes in your relationship status can affect eligibility.

OUR TIP:  Read the eligibility guide thoroughly. If you have a previous partner or your family size has changed, figure out how it affects you before you submit.

Mistake 4: Police certificates

Remember, you need to provide a police certificate for every country you have resided in for more than 6 months after the age of 18. Use the IRCC website to check for instructions.

OUR TIP: Some police certificates need to be provided at the time of your sponsorship application, while other police certificates will be requested after you submit your application. In these cases, IRCC will send you a request letter.

Mistake 5: Misrepresentation of Relationship

A marriage certificate alone isn’t enough to prove your relationship is genuine. IRCC looks for clear, consistent evidence of a real partnership.

OUR TIP: Include a variety of supporting documents, such as:

  • Joint financial records or proof of shared expenses
  • Screenshots of chats, emails, or call logs
  • Photos showing your relationship over time
  • Travel documentation of visits
  • Letters or affidavits from family and friends
